BANK ROBBER RECEIVES 8-YEAR SENTENCE

Robbed banks in Worthington, Zanesville

COLUMBUS – Gary E. Barnett, age 41 and formerly of Columbus was sentenced in United States District Court here today to eight years for robbing two banks in 2005.

Gregory G. Lockhart, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, Stanley J. Borgia, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cincinnati Field Office; Chief Michael Mauger, Worthington Police Department and Chief Eric Lambes, Zanesville Police Department announced the sentence handed down by United States District Judge Gregory L. Frost.

Barnett pled guilty on March 3, 2006 to the July 20, 2005 robbery of the First Merit Bank on West Dublin-Granville Road in Worthington, and the August 9, 2005 robbery to the National City Bank on Maple Avenue in Zanesville.

Barnett was on supervised release at the time of the robberies for robbing the same two banks among others in 1998. He will serve the eight-year sentence he received today after he finishes serving an 18-month sentence in Maryland for state charges and two years in federal prison for violating his supervised release.

FBI agents arrested Barnett in Baltimore, Maryland on August 12, 2005. He has been in custody since his arrest.

Lockhart commended the cooperative investigation by FBI agents and the Zanesville and Worthington Police officers, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin W. Kelley, who prosecuted the case.
